Docusaurus vs Mintlify

Docusaurus and Mintlify are both docs as code: Markdown or MDX files in a repository, reviewed through pull requests. The difference is who runs everything else. With Docusaurus your team builds and hosts the site; with Mintlify a vendor does. Here is how to choose.

Short answer

Choose Docusaurus if you want full control, open source, versioned docs, and you have engineers happy to build and maintain the site, for free. Choose Mintlify if you want the same docs as code workflow without running the site, with a polished API reference and AI on Pro at $450/mo billed yearly, or the free Starter plan without AI.

What does Docusaurus give you?

Control. It's maintained by Meta, free, and endlessly customizable with React. Versioning and localization are built in, the plugin ecosystem is large, and you can host it anywhere. For open source projects and teams with strong front end skills, it's a natural default.

What does Mintlify give you?

Time back. You keep MDX in your repository and pull request reviews, and Mintlify handles hosting, search, a polished design, the API reference, analytics, and AI features. Teams switch to it when maintaining a docs site starts competing with the product for engineering time.

What does each really cost?

Docusaurus costs nothing to license and engineering time to run: setup, theming, search, upgrades, hosting, and any AI or analytics you bolt on. Mintlify Starter costs nothing without AI; Pro is $450/mo billed yearly ($540/mo billed monthly) with unlimited editors and 10,000 AI credits a month. If an engineer spends a few days a quarter on the docs site, the free option isn't free.

What neither changes

Both keep docs in the repository, which makes it possible to update them in the same pull request as the code. Neither makes it happen: docs still drift when changes ship without them. A docs check in your pull request template, see A pull request checklist for docs, helps with either.

How do search and AI compare?

Docusaurus sites commonly use Algolia DocSearch, which is free for qualifying open source projects, or a local search plugin; AI answers are something you add yourself. Mintlify includes search and, on Pro, an assistant that answers readers from your docs with 10,000 credits a month. If AI answers for readers matter, Mintlify gets you there without building anything.

How do they handle versioned docs?

Versioning is one of Docusaurus's signature features: snapshot docs per release and keep older versions browsable, which suits libraries and open source projects with users on several versions. Mintlify supports versions too. For a SaaS product where everyone is on the latest version, versioning matters much less.

What does moving between them involve?

Both use Markdown and MDX, so content mostly moves. Custom React components, plugins, and theme overrides from Docusaurus need rebuilding as Mintlify components, and navigation config needs translating. Keep URL paths the same where you can, and redirect the rest.

Which should you choose?

Pick Docusaurus for open source, full control, and versioned docs maintained by engineers who enjoy it. Pick Mintlify for docs as code without the site maintenance, especially for API products. If your docs are a customer help center that support or a founder maintains, neither workflow suits them; usedocs is a help center for SaaS teams that keeps itself accurate: merged pull requests become proposed edits to the articles they affect, and questions customers ask that the docs can't answer become drafted articles, both approved in one review queue. Its assistant answers from the help center with a link to the source and says so when the docs are silent. It's one plan at $99/mo with 2,000 AI conversations, after a 7 day free trial, no credit card.

FAQ

Is Docusaurus really free?

The software is free and open source. Hosting, setup, upgrades, and add ons cost engineering time.

Does Mintlify support versioned docs?

Yes, though Docusaurus's versioning is one of its signature strengths.

Which has the better API reference?

Mintlify, out of the box. Docusaurus can render API references through community plugins.

Can I move from Docusaurus to Mintlify?

Usually, since both use Markdown and MDX; custom React components need to be rebuilt.

Which is better for open source projects?

Docusaurus is the common choice for open source, being free, self hosted, and widely used.

Who should maintain the docs?

With either, engineers, through pull requests. If support or a founder maintains the docs, a hosted help center fits better.

Can non engineers edit a Docusaurus site?

Not easily: changes go through Markdown files and pull requests. Mintlify adds a web editor, though it's still centered on the repository.

Does Mintlify lock me in?

Your content is MDX in your own repository, so it stays portable; Mintlify specific components need rework if you leave.

Is Docusaurus good for SaaS product docs?

It can be, if engineers maintain it. For product help maintained by support or a founder, a hosted help center is usually easier.

Which loads faster?

Both produce fast sites. Docusaurus builds static HTML you host; Mintlify serves optimized pages for you.

Can I host Docusaurus on any platform?

Yes. It builds static files you can deploy to most static hosts or a CDN of your choice.
