What should an llms.txt file include?
Use a curated map
List the pages an AI reader should inspect first: homepage, pricing, docs, tools, comparison pages, support policies, and high-intent guides. Do not dump every URL; sitemap.xml already does that.
Write plain descriptions
Each link should have a short description that explains why the page matters. Use product facts, not marketing fluff. Keep the file easy to read without JavaScript.
Keep it updated
Update llms.txt whenever pricing, positioning, important docs, or comparison pages change. Stale AI-facing summaries can create wrong answers downstream.
FAQ
Does llms.txt replace sitemap.xml?
No. sitemap.xml is for crawler URL discovery. llms.txt is a human-readable and AI-readable guide to important content.
Should I include private docs?
No. Only link public content that AI systems are allowed to fetch.
